How to get alarms on your laptop that sync with your phone

To get alarms on your laptop that also ring on your phone, sign in to LFG Alarm at lfg.gm in a desktop browser and say yes to Ring your alarms here too?. LFG Alarm is a social alarm clock for iPhone and Android, and the website is the same account: every alarm you have, or ride, rings in the open tab while you work and on your phone when you step away. Answer it in one place and it stops in the other.

Why a laptop alarm

Most alarm apps live on the phone, and the phone is face down while you work. LFG Alarm puts the same alarm where your eyes are:

  • While you work. The alarm rings in the lfg.gm tab with its sound, next to your charts, your timeline or your inbox.
  • When you walk away. Your phone rings for the same alarm. Nothing to set up twice.
  • One answer. Tap I'm up on the phone and the laptop tab stops ringing within seconds, and says it was answered on another device.

Set it up

  1. On your laptop, go to lfg.gm and sign in with your LFG Alarm account.
  2. When it asks Ring your alarms here too?, tap Yes, ring here. That tap is also what lets the browser play sound.
  3. Allow notifications if your browser asks. You can change both any time in Settings on the site.
  4. Keep an lfg.gm tab open. It can be in the background or minimized.

Make alarms on the site the way you do in the app: tap Create and pick a time, a social post, an onchain alarm or anything. An alarm made on the laptop rings on your phone too.

What a browser can and cannot do

Be clear about this one, because an alarm you trust has to be honest:

  • The tab has to be open. A closed tab or a quit browser cannot make sound. Your phone still rings.
  • The laptop has to be awake and online. A sleeping laptop rings nothing. Your phone rings even offline for a time alarm.
  • A laptop ring lasts up to ten minutes. It belongs to its moment: open the laptop two hours later and it will not start playing an old alarm. You get a note saying what rang and when.
  • Phone browsers never ring. On a phone, use the LFG Alarm app. You can still make alarms in a phone browser, and they ring in the app.

So the phone is what wakes you up; the laptop is what gets your attention while you work.

Good uses

  • Trading at your desk. A price, wallet or trader alarm rings in the tab next to your charts, and on your phone when you get up. See crypto alarms on your phone and laptop.
  • Calls and streams. An event or post alarm for the moment a stream goes live or a call starts.
  • Work and builds. An anything alarm that rings the tab when a deploy finishes or a server goes down. See make any app ring your phone.
  • The whole team. Share an alarm with friends and every phone that joined rings together, plus every laptop with an lfg.gm tab open that said yes. See group alarms.

Three desks, three reasons

The trader with headphones on. Kai watches charts on a laptop with noise-cancelling headphones and the phone face down. A price alarm for when a token drops 10% rings in the lfg.gm tab, through the headphones, next to the chart. When he steps out for lunch, the same alarm reaches his phone: full screen on Android, even on Do Not Disturb; on iPhone a time-sensitive alert with the alarm's own sound, so the ringer needs to be on.

The designer who forgets the 3:00 call. Rosa loses track of time in focus mode. A time alarm at 2:55 called "Client call, join now" rings in the tab, and on her phone at the same moment. She answers on the laptop; the phone stops within seconds.

The developer waiting on a deploy. An anything alarm at the end of a build script rings the tab when the deploy finishes, so Lee can stop refreshing the dashboard and go make tea. If he has walked away, his phone rings instead.

Common mistakes

  • Closing the tab at the end of the day and expecting the laptop to ring overnight. It will not. The phone is the one that wakes you.
  • Leaving the laptop to sleep with the lid shut. A sleeping laptop rings nothing.
  • Testing in a phone browser. Phone browsers never ring. Use the app on a phone.
