Ring phones from Alexa and Google Home

Neither an Alexa routine nor a Google Home automation can send a web request on its own, so neither can ring an LFG Alarm anything alarm directly. The way that works is a small hub in between: Home Assistant sends the request, and Alexa or Google Home switches it on by voice or from a routine ("Alexa, turn on Dinner's ready" rings every phone on the alarm). LFG Alarm is a social alarm clock for iPhone and Android, and an anything alarm is its private link that rings every phone that joined when something sends it a POST.

What each one can and cannot do

Alexa routines run actions such as smart home control, announcements, music and skills. There is no built-in action that calls a web address. IFTTT used to fill that gap, but Amazon ended the Alexa connection to IFTTT on 31 October 2023, so "Alexa, trigger..." applets no longer work.

Google Home automations, including the script editor, can broadcast, run an "OK Google" command, switch devices, activate scenes, send a notification and wait. Google's published list of automation actions has no web request or webhook action.

What both can do is switch on a smart home device or scene they know about. That is the opening: make the web request a "device" they can switch on.

Before you start

  • Get the LFG Alarm app on your phone from Google Play or the App Store, and sign in, and so should everyone who should be rung.
  • An anything alarm. In LFG Alarm, make an Anything alarm, for example "Dinner's ready", share it with the people who should hear it, and copy its private link. An anything alarm is private or friends only, never public.
  • Home Assistant, set up as in Connect LFG Alarm to Home Assistant, with a rest_command that POSTs to the link.
  • Home Assistant linked to Alexa or Google. The simplest way is Home Assistant Cloud, run by Home Assistant's makers; you can also set up the Alexa or Google Assistant integration by hand.

Make the ring a script

Add a script that calls your rest_command:

script:
  dinners_ready:
    alias: "Dinner's ready"
    sequence:
      - action: rest_command.ring_dinners_ready

Expose that script to Alexa or Google in Home Assistant's voice assistant settings. Google sees a script as a scene; Alexa runs it with "turn on".

Ring it from Alexa

  • By voice: "Alexa, turn on Dinner's ready."
  • In a routine: in the Alexa app, make a routine with any starter you like (a phrase, a time, an Echo button) and add a Smart Home action that turns on Dinner's ready.

Ring it from Google Home

  • By voice: "Hey Google, activate Dinner's ready."
  • In an automation: in the Google Home app, add an action that activates the Dinner's ready scene. In the script editor that is device.command.ActivateScene.

Home Assistant sends the POST, and every phone on the alarm rings. After a ring the alarm stays quiet for the time chosen when it was made (1 minute to 1 hour), so two people shouting at two speakers ring it once.

Real uses

  • Dinner's ready. Maya's teenagers wear headphones upstairs. One sentence to the kitchen Echo rings both their phones.
  • We're leaving in five. Theo adds the alarm to his Google Home "Leaving" automation, so the whole family's phones ring when he says it.
  • Come help. Priya's dad lives with her and uses a Nest speaker. "Hey Google, activate Call Priya" rings Priya's phone anywhere in the house, louder than a notification. LFG Alarm is not a medical or emergency service; keep real emergency numbers and devices for that.

Other routes

  • iPhone, no hub: Siri can run an Apple Shortcut that POSTs to the link. See Connect LFG Alarm to Apple Shortcuts. This is Siri, not Alexa or Google.
  • Third-party Alexa skills that open a web address. Some skills turn a virtual switch into a link call. The ones we checked do not say they send a POST, and an anything alarm ignores a plain visit (a GET), so we cannot recommend one.
  • No voice at all: any tool that can send a POST can ring it, from n8n to a cron job. See How to make any app, script or feed ring your phone.

If it does not work

  • Running the script in Home Assistant rings, but the voice command does not. The script is not exposed to Alexa or Google; expose it, then ask Alexa to discover devices or sync in Google Home.
  • Nothing rings at all. Run rest_command from Developer tools in Home Assistant. If that fails, check the link and that the method is POST. A 409 answer means the alarm is switched off; a 429 means it is in its quiet time.

questions people ask
Can Alexa or Google set an LFG Alarm, like "wake me at 6"?

Not today. They have no way to reach LFG Alarm's tools. Set alarms in the app, or from an AI app connected to LFG Alarm.

How does it ring?

An anything alarm rings full screen on Android. On iPhone it arrives as a time-sensitive alert with the alarm's sound, so keep the ringer on.

Is the link safe in Home Assistant?

Keep it in `secrets.yaml`. Anyone with the link can ring the alarm; if it leaks, replace it from the alarm's page.
